Guru Purnima

Value learning/ Great personalities

Goal of the session

The aim of this presentation is to remind students that learning comes from many sources and to encourage them to honour and express gratitude to all the people who guide, support, and shape them—both in school and beyond. It teaches us to inspire gratitude for every person who helps us learn and grow.

Content overview

  • Introduction to Guru Purnima – A festival celebrated on the full moon day in July to honour and thank teachers and guides.
  • Meaning and Significance – “Guru” means teacher or guide; the day is linked to the birth of Ved Vyasa and Buddha’s first sermon.
  • Who is a Guru? – A guru is anyone who teaches, guides, shapes character, and shows the right path in life.
  • Historical Gurus – Brief introduction to Guru Nanak Dev Ji, Swami Vivekananda, Dr. Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan, and Rabindranath Tagore.
  • Real-Life Gurus – Highlights that parents, school teachers, nature, friends, and even everyday people can act as teachers in our lives.
  • Role of a Guru – Gurus help us learn, grow, build values, and become better individuals.
  • Reflection Prompt – Encourages students to identify their own guru and express gratitude to them.

Expected takeaways

  • Gratitude strengthens relationships — appreciating those who guide us builds trust, respect, and positive connections.
  • Learning is lifelong — every person and experience can teach us something valuable, not just formal teachers.
  • Guidance shapes character — mentors help us develop values, discipline, and the ability to make better choices.
  • Humility enables growth — being open to learning from others helps us improve and move forward in life.
  • Everyone can be a teacher — through our actions, kindness, and behaviour, we can inspire and guide others too.

Discussion Prompts for children

  • Who in your life has guided you or supported you—even in small ways—and how did it help you?
  • What is one important lesson you have learned from a difficult experience, and how did it change you?
  • Can someone be a “guru” without being a teacher? What qualities make a person a good guide or role model?
  • How do you feel when someone believes in you or encourages you? Why is that kind of support important?
  • What is one positive habit or value you would like to learn or develop in yourself? Who can help you with it?
  • Is there a moment when you helped or taught someone else? How did it feel to be a guide to them?
  • What kind of person would you like to become in the future, and who can help you get there?
