A True Story From Seedling Foundation’s Rehabilitation Program
Aryan (name changed) is a 17 year old boy in our DeepRoots program. His family consists of his mother, and his younger brother.
During our interaction with Aryan’s mother she revealed that she and Aryan’s father have separated 4 years ago and have had no communication since. She explained that Aryan’s father was addicted to alcohol, which led to fights between them and eventually to the separation. After the separation, Aryan’s father moved to another city, stopped providing any financial support and has had no contact with the family since then.
To support her children, Aryan’s mother worked as a domestic worker in multiple households. But she lost her job after she started missing work days to go for the court dates for Aryan’s case. This worsened the family’s financial condition. Unable to pay the rent, the family was forced to vacate their home. She also had to cover legal expenses related to the case for which she borrowed money from unauthorized lenders at high interest rates, further straining the family’s finances.
The family does not possess a Ration card, limiting their access to subsidized food and other government welfare benefits. Although she is effectively a single parent, she is only separated and not legally divorced, making her ineligible for several government schemes intended for single women.
The family’s financial difficulties have also affected Aryan’s younger brother. He is not enrolled in school, as they cannot afford basic educational expenses such as uniforms, books, and other essential school supplies.
This case reflects how legal proceedings, economic vulnerability, lack of social protection, and limited access to government entitlements can compound the challenges faced by families of Children in Conflict with the Law, ultimately affecting both the family’s stability and the child’s rehabilitation journey.
